Deadpool Is Returning In Avengers: Doomsday, But Is That Really A Good Idea?

According to a report by THR, Ryan Reynolds is apparently set to return as Deadpool in Avengers: Doomsday.

“Sources tell Heat Vision that yes, Deadpool will appear in Avengers: Doomsday. (Don’t expect him to actually be joining the Avengers team, though.) “

This notion is further supported by this photo Ryan Reynolds posted onto his Instagram last week, showing an Avengers logo being vandalized.

In addition, the sets used for Deadpool & Wolverine were also repurposed into sets for Doomsday, indicating that our heroes would likely spend a lot of time in the Void. With Channing Tatum already confirmed to be returning as Gambit, who’s to say that Deadpool won’t be joining him?

With all that being said, however, should Marvel really be doing this? I mean, Deadpool has always existed in his small bubble within the Fox universe, and even when he transitioned into the MCU, he’s never really interacted with any characters from the main continuities. In the comics, Deadpool also often headlines his own adventures, and isn’t really part of a supporting cast. His wild antics and fourth wall-breaking shenanigans make it incredibly difficult to shoehorn him into any other stories, and can easily cause tonal whiplash that distracts from the overall plot. This is why on the rare occasions where he does appear in other characters’ stories, they’re often comedic runs or limited series that lack stakes, because that is the environment that a character like Deadpool fits in.

The same is true for the MCU Deadpool, whose antics simply wouldn’t fit into a film like Doomsday. Doomsday is a serious, high-stakes project that marks the end of the Multiverse Saga, and the deaths of many of our favorite characters. Having Deadpool making jokes or schlocky references as Loki and Doom duke it out just lessens the impact of the scene, and would disappoint fans who wanted a more serious, hardcore finale.

The second problem with putting Deadpool in a movie like Doomsday is that there’s simply no room for his existence. There are already 27 cast members confirmed for Doomsday, with plenty more likely on the way. The movie already feels overstuffed as it is, and a distracting figure like Deadpool will just take attention away from the rest of the cast. He’s also never interacted with the majority of those characters, which would create a big disconnect between his character and the rest of the plot.

Finally, the largest and most glaring problem with placing Deadpool in Doomsday is simply that he has no reason to be there. He’s not a character that’s integral to the Multiverse Saga, and hasn’t really interacted with anyone outside the Fox continuity at all. There’s so much setup that needs to be done in order to give him a purpose within the story, and I just don’t think the Russo brothers are willing to spend so much time trying to slot in a character that’s basically the embodiment of cheap fan service.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Deadpool as a character and I think Ryan Reynolds portrayed him perfectly, but I just don’t think a character like Deadpool can work in Doomsday. I really like his position now, where he just leads his own standalone stories like in the comics. This approach is what works best for Deadpool, and lets him get up to whatever shenanigans he wants without impacting the rest of the universe.
