Spiderman: Brand New Day – Why Is Marvel Spoiling Their Own Movie?

Unless you’ve been living under a rock these past few months, you’ve probably at least heard of the MCU’s next upcoming release, Spiderman: Brand New Day, following a lonely, depressed Peter Parker being Spiderman in a world that doesn’t remember who he is. Everything we’ve seen, from Destin Daniel Crettin being announced as director to the final COMIC-accurate suit reveal, has been incredibly positive, and its clear that Marvel and Sony are very confident in the film. So confident in fact that they’re doing promotion for the film over a year before its release, releasing official set photos (that go so hard by the way, especially the one below), and even a day-one set vlog [link here]. However, one complaint that I’ve frequently seen online, and which seems to be a common superhero movie trend these days, is that Marvel is slowly spoiling the plot of Brand New Day, almost one year in advance. We’ve basically seen Peter’s entire suit design already, not to mention his practical swinging, and the reveal of the Inner Demons logo that basically confirms Mr. Negative as the film’s main villain.

However, I believe that the reason behind all this is pretty simple: it all stems down to leaker. See, with the filming for Brand New Day taking place across 60 streets in Scotland in broad daylight, it’s inevitable that people are going to record and post it online. There’ll also be a fair share of scoopers leaking as much stuff as possible to go viral, and there’s not much Marvel can do to stop them from ruining the surprise for everyone. Marvel is currently using these official set photos as a way to beat these scoopers at their own game, by revealing what they want the public to see on their own terms. Instead of getting a cool reveal spoiled through a low-quality 240p photo taken from an old flip phone, we’re instead getting treated to 4k eye candy from the Marvel team themselves. This is a genius move, shutting down any potential leakers while simultaneously promoting the movie and building up the hype train. Seriously, the amount of videos I’ve seen of people analyzing the set photos pixel by pixel is absolutely crazy. At the end of the day, I still would’ve preferred to see Tom Holland accidentally spoil the movie himself, because those reveals were just pure gold.

I think that post credits scene is now out the window thanks to the SSU crumbling. I don’t really know what Sony was doing with that NWH post credits scene, and I don’t think it would’ve been any good. While I do want Tom Holland to eventually get the symbiote suit, that should be saved until Secret Wars.
